Blue Ridge Collaborative is proud to stand alongside BLK South in a bold and deeply meaningful effort to:
Through the BLK South Community Development Initiative, neighborhoods are being transformed through storytelling, education, celebration, and creative engagement rooted in the traditions and lived experiences of historically Black communities throughout the South.
A Vision Rooted in Community
Founded and led by Erin and Kendall Dooley, BLK South is more than a nonprofit organization. It is a movement dedicated to cultivating spaces where culture, healing, creativity, and community ownership can thrive together. Their work recognizes that revitalization is not simply about buildings or infrastructure. It is about investing in people, honoring heritage, and creating environments where communities feel seen, valued, and empowered.
By combining arts, food justice, cultural preservation, and community development, BLK South is creating opportunities for residents to reconnect with one another while building a stronger foundation for the future.
Growing Opportunities Through Food and Education
One major focus of the initiative is the development of a community garden paired with an educational curriculum centered on:
This project will provide local youth with hands-on opportunities to learn where food comes from, how healthy communities are cultivated, and why access to fresh, nutritious food matters.
Beyond education, the garden will serve as a gathering place where neighbors can connect, share knowledge, and strengthen relationships across generations. It is a space designed not only to grow food, but also to grow community.
Celebating Culture and Community
BLK South is also creating vibrant cultural experiences that celebrate identity, creativity, and togetherness. Events like the Summer Block Party and Día de los Muertos celebration are designed to bring people together through music, art, food, and storytelling while honoring the diverse traditions that shape Southern communities.
These gatherings create opportunities for joy, remembrance, and connection while supporting local artists, creators, and small businesses. They remind us that community development is not only about meeting needs, but also about creating moments of celebration and belonging.
Amplifying Southern Stories
Another exciting component of this initiative is a multi-city podcast series that will amplify stories from communities across the South. Through audio and video storytelling, BLK South is preserving narratives that are too often overlooked while creating a platform for voices that deserve to be heard.
These stories will highlight resilience, creativity, and the lived experiences of people working to shape stronger futures within their own communities. By documenting these experiences, BLK South is helping preserve cultural memory while inspiring meaningful conversations across generations.
