Born in Montgomery County, Maryland, to immigrant parents from El Salvador and Peru, Erwin Hesse grew up facing many of the challenges that come with navigating identity, belonging, and expectations. His story is one of setbacks transformed into opportunity.
After struggling with destructive influences and difficult choices early in life, education became the turning point that reshaped his future. Through determination, discipline, and resilience, Erwin became the first member of his family to earn a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree.
His career has since focused on expanding educational access and opportunity, including leadership roles at the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, Amazon, and Admissions Gambit. Today, he continues advancing equity in higher education as the inaugural Director of the Center for Innovation in College Admission.
