In Their Shoes examines racism, segregation, integration, injustice, and repression through the experiences and lens of Central High School graduates in the small southern town of Hillsborough, North Carolina. By looking at these experiences, In Their Shoes will tell the larger story of the fight for civil rights throughout the South.
This project will feature focus stories that deconstruct the bigger themes of racism and repression in the segregated South during the 20th century. In Their Shoes will be compiled for (3) hour-long documentaries exploring various aspects of Black and Indigenous culture in Hillsborough, North Carolina. These documentaries will be titled:
Why They Fought: A documentary examining the experiences of Black soldiers and exploring why they fought in American wars while being denied full democracy at home
Negro Baseball Leagues: A documentary focusing on the Hillsborough All-Stars and their role in the Negro Baseball Leagues
Walk These Halls: A documentary that brings Central High School graduates back through the halls of Hillsborough Elementary to reflect on their experiences with segregation and the fight for integration
