Conversations around child safety can often feel overwhelming, fear-driven, or reactive. But CJ Scarlet (known to many as “The Badass Grandma”) is working to change that. Through The Heroic Kids Safety Game, she is creating an interactive digital platform that helps children and teens build confidence, awareness, and practical safety skills in a way that feels empowering rather than frightening.
At Blue Ridge Collaborative, we are proud to partner with CJ Scarlet on a project that approaches safety education with creativity and compassion.
CJ’s work is deeply personal. As a survivor and longtime child safety advocate, she understands both the risks children face and the importance of equipping families with tools that encourage communication instead of fear. Her mission is rooted in a simple but powerful belief that children are safer when they understand how to protect themselves and feel supported having open conversations with trusted adults.
Reimagining Safety Education
The Heroic Kids Safety Game transforms personal safety and digital literacy into an immersive, game-based learning experience for children ages 5 to 18. Through customizable animal sidekicks, interactive storytelling, and age-appropriate lessons, the app helps young users navigate topics such as online safety, bullying, consent, and personal boundaries.
What makes the platform especially impactful is its emphasis on connection between parents and children. Through a dedicated Parent Portal, caregivers can guide and support their child’s experience while building stronger communication and trust along the way.
Rather than relying on fear-based messaging, the project encourages confidence, awareness, and proactive learning. This approach helps children understand that they have agency, instincts, and tools that can help keep them safe.
Blue Ridge Collaborative’s Role
We are partnering with CJ Scarlet to help bring The Heroic Kids Safety Game to life through strategic creative and development support. Our work includes helping develop the beta version of the app, supporting pilot testing with students and parents, and assisting with the creation of specialized educational modules focused on online dangers and bullying.
As the project grows, the platform will expand to include a broader suite of safety education tools, including modules focused on sexual consent awareness and anti-trafficking education for schools and organizations.
This work reflects BRC’s commitment to projects that educate, empower, and create real social impact through storytelling and innovation.
