Project Spotlight: In Their Shoes

May 14, 2026

In Hillsborough, North Carolina, history is always around the corner. It is remembered, carried, and still shaping the present. In Their Shoes is a powerful multi-film documentary series that brings that history into focus through the voices of those who lived it. Centered on the experiences of Central High School graduates, the project explores racism, segregation, integration, and injustice in the American South, offering a deeply personal lens into a defining era.

Rather than approaching history from a distance, In Their Shoes invites audiences to step into it. Through firsthand accounts, the series captures the realities of navigating segregated schools, the fight for civil rights, and the resilience required to push forward in the face of systemic barriers. These are not abstract narratives. They are lived experiences that continue to echo across generations.

Three Stories, One Shared History

The project spans across three feature-length documentaries, each exploring a different dimension of this history. Why They Fought examines the experiences of Black soldiers who served their country while being denied full democracy at home. Negro Baseball Leagues highlights the Hillsborough All-Stars and their role in a vital chapter of American sports and cultural history. Walk These Halls returns former students to the spaces where segregation and integration shaped their formative years, offering reflection, memory, and perspective.

Together, these films tell a larger story, one that connects individual experiences to broader systems of inequality and resistance. By focusing on specific narratives, the project creates a more complete and human understanding of the past.

Why This Story Matters Now

Projects like In Their Shoes are essential because they preserve histories that are too often simplified, overlooked, or forgotten. When we listen to the voices of those who lived through these experiences, history becomes more than words on a page. These stories provide context for the present and remind us of the work still ahead.

At Blue Ridge Collaborative, we believe storytelling has the power to deepen connection and expand perspective. By supporting In Their Shoes, we are helping ensure that these voices are not only preserved, but shared in ways that resonate with new audiences.

Note: As part of our ongoing partnership with leaders in the Black and Indigenous communities, Blue Ridge Collaborative will entrust all the legacy footage and research for this project with Indigenous Memories, a Hillsborough-based nonprofit that currently stewards burial sites of Indigenous and enslaved people.
